Astro Boy Game

Game Illustration and Processing (Using Java Library) Language
Project Overview
Creating a game that uses with Processing. Astro Boy includes my own invididual style in art and uses Processing and illustrations to tell a simple story.

Processing is based loosely on Java, but has it's own Syntax overall.
The software aims to increase software literary with art.

Idea

My final project involves a story-telling code to create a visual and engaging experience. I would like to make a simple adventure story that would incorporate my own visual styles with coding and gaming. During these unprecedented times, I came to realize what technology is capable of when paired with art, visual design, and storytelling. As someone that enjoys storytelling, I would like to take this opportunity to create a simple story that would express a journey that would let viewers explore a different world and adopt that persona. Similar to Benjamin Maus and Julis von Bismarck (p139-141) I would like to create a storytelling program but the difference is that I will not depend as much on combinations of various algorithms to tell the story. Maus and Bismarck’s tool uses algorithms and combines popular keywords and the information gathered would turn into illustrations and present a story. For my project, the goal would be to write my own story and then turn it into an interactive experience. Another artist that inspired me in the Reas book is Lynn Hersman Leeson who created LORNA (p249-251), where the program is an interactive installation for people to adopt the persona of a lead character. Through the story telling, I would like to create a game that would let the viewers adopt or be invented into the storyline of the game. Like the creator, I would like to explore iconic methods for interactions for people to understand the story. One thing that was interesting in the way LORNA was reported as a way that manipulated someone’s life. In my game, instead of manipulating someone’s life, I would like for the player to explore someone else's life. Steph Thirion, the creator of the multi-touch video game Eliss (p261-262), is another artist that I found interesting and would keep in mind when designing my game. In my game, if possible I would like to create microinteractions; such as: circles that would follow or appear when pressed. Another interesting idea was the use of simple shapes as a style, which has been the style that I have been exploring lately in Processing. On the other hand, while I would like to explore the use of simple shapes, I would like to see if I can combine it with other shapes to create a visual experience.

Takeaway

Astro Boy was the final project for was an introduction to learning the program Processing. In the future, I would like to learn more about programming and how the different languages can be used to achieve different designs and functions.
